RE: North Carolina-Maggie Valley-Jonathan Creek area???

We stay at Creekwood. They cater more for adults as there really isn't much for kids to do in the CG. Run by some very nice people. Convenient to I-40 and to explore Cataloochee Valley (part of GSMNP).

RE: Highlands Hammock SP, Fla question

If you want real mtn. bike trails, try Alafia SP near Plant City. They have lots of trails, some are rated extremely difficult. Nice park too.

RE: Collier-Seminole SP Florida

We were there a couple of years ago about the same time you are going. Didn't have mosquito problems but the CG is pretty crowded. We were on a corner and had people on both sides of us crammed in so tight we got to know each other real well. Nice people though. Would we go back there, yes. Lots to do in the area. Make sure you are not too big to get in - had some friends came in with a 5er and couldn't fit into their site. Helpful folks running the place though and they got him situated OK in another site.

RE: 14 days in the Smokey Mountains

14 days is not too much for the Smokies but it does depend on what you like to do. We don't usually go to the tourist places like Gatlinburg. We spend every spring there because we like to hike, take photos, see wildflowers and kick back. Cades Cove is our favorite with Smokemont coming in a close second. Elkmont is OK but not one we would go back as we like the other two better. There is no real reason for this. We have seen kayakers in the river near Cades Cove but not very often so it may depend on the amount of water in the river.
Smokemont has sites right on the river, very nice. There is a trail in the CG is that really beautiful. Less to do on that side of the park. Tons of trails near Cades Cove.
If you can, the Cataloochoo Valley area is really great with few people. They introduced elk there several years ago and the herd can be seen daily in the valley. Good trail too. They have a CG there but there is no way we would take a trailer up that mountain although, from the looks of the CG, there are many who do.
Have a great time - we go there so often we consider it our second home. There are some pictures in our webalbum (see link in our sig.)

RE: Glacier Nat'l Park campground info

Also, we love to hike, what's the best hiking trails at GNP?
Almost any hike in Glacier is a good one. Been years but I can recommend Highline trail, Iceberg Lake, Sunrift Gorge, Grinnell Glacier, St. Mary's and Virginia Falls, Avalanche Lake, Any hike with a waterfall or lake on the other end will be good. Really, there are just tons of hikes to fit almost any skill level. If I had to recommend just one it would be the Highline Trail for the views and the wildflowers. If it is a good year for beargrass that will be an added bonus.
The rangers are very knowledgeable and can help you decide what you want to do. I do recommend taking many layers. We hiked Highline in July and ran into hail and snow at the beginning of the trip and 80 degrees at the end. Any kind of weather can occur in those mountains.
Have fun, Susan

You will just have to decide. Don't let me even get started on the Badlands.
Really, no matter what you decide, you will see wonderful places and have a great time doing so.

RE: Big Bend National and border safety

Along the river, the Mexicans set up blankets on which they place goods for sale. Usual tourist stuff: painted rocks, jewelry, carved hiking sticks, etc. The Mexicans sit on the other side of river and yell across encouraging tourists to buy the wares. The NPS asks visitors not to purchase anything from these "stalls". Legal wares from Mexico are sold in the NPS gift shops for those interested. They also graze their burros in the park.
Safety on this section of the border - it wasn't a problem when we were there. Not many illegals cross the river there because it is 60 miles to food and water and there are places to cross closer to civilization. As far as thieves breaking into your car, it can happen in any park in any state, and the perpetrator can be any nationality. Keep no valuables in your car and keep the doors locked.

This is the view you get from the Rio Grand Village CG. Yes, it is a paved parking lot but I wouldn't have given up my evening happy hours with this view for anything.

RE: Rocky Mt. Nat. Pk. rv parks

I second staying in the park. We stayed a week at both Moraine and Glacier Basin last year. More wildlife in Moraine for some reason. The elk were IN the campground in the early evening at Moraine.
Enjoy your trip.

RE: PHEW! the neighbors holding tank stinks

Thought we had a problem with ours one time and it turned out to be a propane leak in one of those small disposable tanks we use for the lantern. Didn't realize that propane is given that artificial odor to alert you to the leak.

RE: Why clean bathrooms?

Not everybody out there is just two old folks in a big Hitchhiker. You have no idea what kind of rig someone has, or how many people are in it, yet you make value judgments about other peoples needs.
Have you tried to get a family of six to eight people through morning showers and evening baths using the little corner bathroom in a small TT? Have you tried this in your own?
I think you will find that most RVers using the campground facilities are also using their own.
Sorry Tom and everyone else, really didn't mean to make anyone angry and I wasn't trying to make value judgments either. Guess I should have put a lot of happy faces on my question so people wouldn't take everything so seriously. Let's drop the subject OK and I promise never to bring up anything that gets my curiosity up again.:B:B:B

Why clean bathrooms?

Just saw another post requesting info on campgrounds with clean bathrooms. I have no idea what kind of rig the person had but it reminded me of something I have always wanted to know. I understand why tenters and those with pop-ups need clean bathrooms but why is it so necessary to the rest of us RVers? Our unit came with a bathroom; we paid for it; it is always clean; and no one else has ever used it. Why wouldn't we use it every chance we get? The water pressure in the shower is not always the greatest but if it becomes a problem, we just run the pump. I guess I just don't understand why so many RVers won't use their own bathrooms. It always amazes me to see huge RVs parked right next to the restrooms while those without indoor plumbing get stuck miles away.
We are fairly new to RV so maybe I'm missing something?

RE: Rig size max

Some older CGs have limitations on the size of RV that will fit into their sites. Most CGs, including quite a few National Parks, have sites that will accommodate most RVs. Private campgrounds almost always will accommodate the larger RVs. That being said, it is always wise to call ahead if you aren't sure. We have never had a problem although we have found sites that were large enough but had a turn radius that was too small or a turn into the campground that was too tight. Even so, we never had to leave because of our size. Somehow they manage to help us out. Most of our camping is done in national and state parks.

I ran into the same problem at Crooked Creek, CG in upper SC.
I think Crooked Creek is in St. Mary's GA near the FL border.
I have to protect the reputation of SC state parks.:B

RE: Holly Point-Falls Lake- Seventy East Mobil Acres-Garner NC

Just tried to camp at Fall Lake. Nice CG with large sites, long and wide. Had to leave as we kept tripping the circuit breaker on the 30 amp post. They don't have 50 amp. Maintenance man told us that some of the newer trailers cause the ground fault to trip. He sent us to Rolling Hills about 7 miles away and part of the same lake system. They just upgraded their electric and added 50 amp service. We had no problems and the sites were large. The atmosphere is a little better at Fall Lake but we wouldn't hesitate to go back to Rolling Hills.
Never heard of the other park so I can't comment.

RE: Natural Bridge State Park Resort

We stayed at Natural Bridge and liked it. The sites were OK, park staff helpful and it was close to the trails. There is a note in our journal that said the sites were small and tight. We did look at Whittleton, with our, at the time, 30' TT we just would not have fit unless we wanted to park across from the entrance station. Even so, our slide would have been in the road and there was no where to step out of the TT except on the side of a hill. Pretty CG though if you can fit in.
I seem to remember that the hook-ups were on the wrong side in Natural Bridge. There is a river/creek that runs through it.
